Executive Pay

Filed under: America's Future, Political and Financial, The Markets — Tom @ 9:04 PM

The astronomical level of executive pay in America is beyond comprehension to most of us. While many are outraged, this is not an issue that begs government intervention. Government regulation of pay is never appropriate in a free society. There are market based solutions available that should be employed. I oppose regulation, but, as I said in a previous article, it is often the role of government to create a proper environment wherein market based solutions can function. This is one such example.

We have structural problems in this country that allow distortions to exist. Very simply, we who are empowered to prevent these distortion have been neutered, in part by our own apathy, but largely by misled government regulations intended to protect us from ourselves. (more…)

Where’s The Outrage?

We’re all aware the demonstrations of 2009 (continuing into 2010) took the name “Tea Party” to reference the Boston Tea Party. Some participants even wore tea bags hanging from their hats. This was all done to make the very serious point that many Americans feel ignored and betrayed by government and intend to bring about change.

The government, represented mainly by the Democratic majority, viewed the tea parties with contempt. This reaction essentially proved the demonstrators’ point (more…)

Please Don’t Fight

Filed under: In The Middle, Political Parties — Tom @ 7:05 PM

Last week President Obama gave a relatively short speech in Elyria, Ohio in which he used the words, “I’ll never stop fighting” approximately twenty times. Fighting..fighting..fighting, politicians are always fighting. They claim they’re fighting for us. Hillary must have said that ten thousand times during her race for the presidency. She would stand square on the stage and clinch her fist and shout something about fighting. I found that really scary. I almost felt sorry for Bill, because I imagine at least once during the mid-nineties he must have experienced some of that fighting. I bet she could kick his you-know-what. (more…)

Dumb? Or Not Paying Attention?

Filed under: America's Future, In The Middle, Political Parties — Tom @ 6:34 AM

Are we undergoing a revolution of mass public involvement or are the tea parties and marches the work of a fringe element? When last I wrote on this subject, I proposed that we should tread carefully and nurture this newly revived voter interest and not assume anything. While recent election results seem to indicate rejection of the status quo, positive proof is not yet evident. Furthermore, are the demonstrators rejecting the Democrats who presently hold power, or (more…)

Pollution – Global Warming?

Filed under: America's Future, Environment, International — Tom @ 5:29 AM

When I was a little kid I used to love those awful science fiction movies that were so popular in those days. They were all about earth-destroying catastrophes caused by Martians, asteroids or gigantic creatures, and featured one or more scientists who find earth-saving solutions at the last possible minute. I thought it would be so cool to be one of those scientists and be the hero who saves mankind. I didn’t realize science requires brains and discipline, both of which elude me to this day.

Apparently I wasn’t the only kid who aspired to mankind-saving hero status. (more…)

Populism Won’t Work

Filed under: Political and Financial, The Markets — Tom @ 9:07 AM

Obama seems to be searching for some cause that will ignite the nation’s anger at something or someone else. I could almost feel sorry for him, except I can’t forget that just the other day he was trying to jam a huge health care bill down my throat. He’s about to learn that populism (more…)

Born Again American

Like all of you, I get a lot of very good e-mails. Some are funny, some are dirty, some are stupid and some are inspiring. I generally forward them to a group of people who I think will enjoy them. Today my wife received an e-mail from a friend that had a link to something I think is absolutely outstanding. I want to share it with you. It’s a song and it’s a little long, so turn your speakers up, sit back and enjoy. The name of the song is http:“Born Again American”

The organization responsible for the song is called Bornagainamerican.org. and it was founded by Norman Lear of television fame. Check it out: Born Again American Site

I hope you find it as inspirational and enjoyable as I did. If so, please send the link to others.
